Before I started Uni, I was always weak at drawing, especially people. Knowing the course did Life Drawing was another reason I chose Derby as I knew I had to develop my skills. While still not 'strong', I can definitely see improvement in my work whether it be from the classes or from watching tutorials.
The Beginning
At the start, I didn't really know how to lay out a person. I started by outlining the body and any key folds however this took so much time and I had to draw from eye. You can even see in some pictures that they are incomplete.
The Middle
I started to experiment with different ways of laying out the body. In these examples I began using a skeleton bone drawing by drawing in where the bones/joints connect with each other then drawing around these bones to add the skin and muscles. This was still time consuming. Even though I began to draw in scale, I'd still miss pieces out as it is essentially drawing a skeleton before doing what I had done previously.
(I know there are creases - I've learned my lesson)
The Present
So now I've started using circles and ellipses to layout the body to begin with and lay out the folds around that. I use this because the body is essentially shapes strung together with joints. Instead of drawing what I see directly in front of me, I instead picture what shape is in front of me and develop it from that. I find this technique is working best for me at the moment.
