Firstly, I knew I wanted SID to be a droid/robot so I began looking up references for him from movies and games. Wall-E and the Star Wars Droid were both major references as I knew I wanted SID to still maintain a slight human anatomical appearance while emotions were to be displayed through the use of his eyes and limbs. The droid has a very good resemblance to a human appearance while Wall-E can only communicate in the way outlined. Dog from Half-Life was referenced as the design of the limbs was similar to that on SID as well as texture. SID's face closely resembles that of Johnny 5, specifically the large, circular eyes on either side of a rectangle. Blitzcrank from League of Legends was used to see what additions could be made to SID in terms of pipes, bolts and texture.
SID is a fairly weak droid in comparison to ones that you may see in other games or movies (Such as those shown in the Character Mood-board). As he's built from scrap, I added additions to him that would be seen in reality such as his upper torso being a computer case with a main cable plug for charging his battery. Also a large cluster of wires runs from his head to his middle torso where the SatNav is placed as this connects his 'brain' and 'heart'.
As also stated, SID only communicates through limbs and eyelid/eyebrow movements, with this in mind I drew some basic facial expressions in order of: Neutral, Worried, Disapproving, Anger, Interest, Sad, Sleep, Happy, Stunned.
